Description

The plate features two photographs. The upper photograph shows a view overlooking the River Thames in central London, England. The photo was possibly taken during the Thames Victoria Embankment, a work between circa 1905 and circa 1912 using civil engineering to reclaim marshy land next to the Thames. The Hotels Cecil and Savoy, and the Cleopatra's Needle can be seen on the left side of the photograph. Steamboats can be seen on the river. Notes above the photo reads Thames Embankment, London. Notes on the right and below the image read "2 3/4 inches" and "4 inches". Notes on the right side out of the illustration board read "This only. Wanted by 3 PM November 5" followed by illegible word due to the cut off paper. Notes at the bottom right read "#249 P. 119 N.S.G.", possibly referring to the Natural School Geography by Redway, Jacques W. and Hinman, Russell between 1907 to 1924. The lower photograph shows the Royal Palace and the Pleasure Garden in Berlin, Germany. The Royal Palace, also known as the Berlin Palace, was the main residence of the House of Hohenzollern from 1443 to 1918. Notes above the photograph read "Royal Palace and Pleasure Gardens, Berlin, Germany". Text in black ink and upside down along the upper edge of the illustration board read "62412". Notes on the right read "2 1/4 inches".
