During World War I, the SATC was a national program created to train male students who volunteered for the program, preparing them to become soldiers. They were given basic training as well as classes in telegraphy, carpentry, masonry, auto mechanics, etc. The students were trained in the summer and fall of 1918, but the program was disbanded at the end of the year with the Armistice. It's estimated that over a thousand students were trained at SU in this time frame. The following year, 1919, ROTC was established at the university.
